Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland (Screen Ireland) is delighted to congratulate Claire McCabe and Rory Fleck-Byrne, the Irish Screen International Stars of Tomorrow, which was announced today. Stars of Tomorrow is the annual showcase of the UK and Ireland’s most exciting young actors, directors, writers, producers and heads of department.
Irish producer Claire McCabe (The Ghost of Richard Harris, Safe as Houses) and actor/filmmaker Rory Fleck-Byrne (This is Going to Hurt, Dash) have been selected as part of the spotlight on new talent within the industry.
The line-up was overseen by Fionnuala Halligan, Screen’s executive editor, reviews and new talent. Halligan said:
“Two decades is enough to confidently say Stars of Tomorrow has the best track record in the business of identifying creative talent with a dazzling future, all the way through from this story you are reading to Baftas and Oscars, with Cannes and Venice in between. Next stop: the red carpet.
The line-up in 2023 is as stellar as ever, coming to you from across both countries, and the aim is to present a snapshot of where we are in the independent filmmaking sector. It’s impressive for an industry that’s struggling — these are the people dedicated to it and whose energy will carry it forward. The same goes for so many others who applied.”
Sponsored by Amazon Prime, the 2023 UK & Ireland Stars of Tomorrow are following in the footsteps of some of today’s biggest names in film and television, many of whom are now Bafta and Oscar winners and nominees. From Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrea Arnold in the inaugural selection in 2004 to David Oyelowo, Ruth Negga, Abi Morgan (2005), Riz Ahmed, Andrea Riseborough (2006), Dev Patel, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Andrew Haigh (2008), Daniel Kaluuya, Destiny Ekaragha (2009), John Boyega, Michael Pearce (2011), Jack Lowden, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (2014), Florence Pugh, Jodie Comer (2016), Michaela Coel, Jessie Buckley (2017), Niamh Algar, Joseph Quinn (2018), Ncuti Gawa, Paul Mescal, Emma Corrin (2020), Daryl McCormack (2021) and Hazel Doupe and Cleona Ní Chrualaoí from last year, the Screen International UK & Ireland Stars of Tomorrow alumni are now among the leading UK and Irish lights of the global industry.
All of this year’s UK & Ireland Stars of Tomorrow will take part in a special event in London on July 5.
